Buying A Used Bus? 3 Things You Need To Inspect Before You Buy The Bus
A bus is a big expense and buying a used one is a smart decision. Before you start shopping, however, you need to learn what you need to look for in the bus. This will ensure the bus is in good condition, so it lasts you a long time. To help you get started shopping, below are three things you need to inspect.
The Bus Frame
The bus frame is also known as the chassis. Walk around the bus and check if there is any kind of rust or other damage to the frame. Make sure you look underneath the bus also. Use a flashlight to allow you to see better. Also check around both the headlights and the tail lights for rust.
If you see a lot of rust, then you should move on. This is a sign the bus has not been taken care of. If you scrape your finger across the rust and you see metal, the rust is deep, and it will not below before holes will start to appear. If you scratch over the rust with your fingernail and still see paint, then the rust is on the surface. With this you can sand the area and repaint it.
The Bus Engine
Even if you are not a mechanic there are things you can look for in the engine. For example, you will be able to see any leaks or oil spots. Look at the hoses to see if they are in good condition. You also need to check the oil. When checking look at the oil. If it is thick and gunky it has not been changed in some time. The antifreeze levels should also be checked.
You also need to drive the bus. Before you do this start the engine and let the bus idle for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This will warm up the engine and allow you to listen for problems. While driving listen for any noises that are not normal and make sure the bus does not smoke.
Tires
Ask the bus owner how old the tires are. One thing to look for is the tread to make sure the tread depth is correct. If you do not know the correct depth talk with a tire shop and they can tell you. There are tread depth gauges you can purchase. If you do not want to use this, you can use a penny. Insert the penny into a tire groove. You should not be able to see Lincoln's head. If you do, then the tire or tires need to be replaced.
You also need to check for knots, cuts, or bumps on the tires. Because these tires are large you must take your time.
