5 Great Car Safety Features For Senior Drivers
Your risk on the road is often the greatest when you are a young driver and an older driver. As a senior driver, your reflexes may not be as quick as they once more. Luckily, over the past decade, lots of safety features have been implemented in cars to make driving safer for senior drivers.
1. Blind Spot Detection
With blind spot detection, sensors are installed on your vehicle. These sensors can detect when an object, such as a car or a person, is within your blind spot. Your vehicle will let you know someone is in this space in various ways, such as through small lights on the door mirrors that will alert you to someone in your blind spot so you don't turn into them.
2. Blind Spot or Backup Cameras
Next, a blind spot or backup camera is another way to stay safe when backing up or changing lanes. These cameras provide you with a live feed of the back of your vehicle so that you can more easily see everything that is around your car without craning your neck and checking your mirrors multiple times. A backup camera will give you the visibility you need to make safe moves.
3. Lane Depart Warning
A lane depart warning uses sensors and cameras to track the white lines on the road. If you leave the white lines that define your lane's boundary, your vehicle will start to beep and alert you that you are drifting out of your lane.
Some vehicles will also help steer you back within your lane depending on how the lane departure warning system is set up. A lane departure warning system will make sure you stay within the lines when you drive.
4. Automatic Emergency Braking
An automatic emergency braking, or AEB system, is designed to help you during an emergency. Your vehicle can be equipped with sensors that determine if an accident is going to happen immediately.
With an AEB system, the sensors will apply the brakes immediately, increasing your response time and helping to avoid collisions or reduce the damage during an accident. An AEB is a great backup system.
5. Forward Collision Warning
With a forward collision warning (FCW) system, a combination of cameras, laser, or radar is used to scan the vehicles in front of you and determine how quickly they are moving in relation to how quickly you are moving.
If it is determined that you are approaching a vehicle too fast, based on their sped and your speed, a visual and/or auditory signal will be issued to alert you to the potential for a forward collision accident. The visual and/or auditory signal is designed to give you enough time to respond and avoid an accident.
Many forward warning collision systems work together with the automatic emergency braking system, engaging the brakes if you don't do it soon enough.
As a senior driver, look for a new or used car that is equipped with the safety features listed above. These safety features will help make sure you can maintain your excellent driving record and stay safe on the road. Contact a car dealership for more information regarding used or new cars for sale.
